Following the success of our screening event in November 2020, this coming April 25, 2021, the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) invites you to an online screening event of Secrets of the Surface. This will be the first screening of the film with Japanese subtitles, which were developed with help from the Kavli IPMU. The event will also discuss Maryam’s thoughts on her work.

The Fields Medal is considered the Nobel Prize of mathematics. Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani is a documentary film that examines the life and mathematical work of Maryam Mirzakhani. In 2014, she became the first woman and first Iranian to receive the Fields Medal. The film looks at mathematics education in Iran, about what it’s like to be a woman in the field of mathematics, and Maryam’s impact on the field through her work.

This is an opportunity to see a different side to mathematics. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required. We look forward to seeing you.

Film: Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani

Often called the Nobel Prize of mathematics, the Fields Medal is awarded once every four years to a handful of mathematicians under 40 years of age. The award recognizes their outstanding contributions to the field, and their potential to continue to contribute to mathematics in the future. In 2014, Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman and first Iranian to receive the award.

Introduction: Yukari Ito (Kavli IPMU Professor)

Commentary: Hideki Miyachi (Professor, School of Mathematics and Physics, Kanazawa University)

After receiving his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Osaka City University, Miyachi has held posts at Tokyo Denki University and Osaka University, before becoming a Professor at Kanazawa University in 2018.

Summary: Maryam Mirzakhani’s work has had a profound impact in mathematics, and it lead to many new ideas. My talk will be about her early work on the volume of moduli space. This work appears in places beyond our every day senses in hyperbolic geometry. So the first part of my talk will to explain what this is, and then move onto talking about Maryam’s work. I hope this will help people get a sense of what Maryam was thinking when she was working on this.
