Perturbative approach to large-scale structure formation

Cosmological perturbation theory plays an essential role in understanding the formation of large-scale structure (LSS) of the universe. On a fairly large scale (long-wavelengths), the cosmological fluctuations can be treated perturbatively using the fluid description. Effective field theory methods allow us to integrate out the nonlinear, small-scale, modes where the physics gets increasingly complex (dark matter halo dynamics, galaxy formation, baryonic physics, etc.). We will discuss the performance of the approach in light of the current and upcoming observational surveys.
